Lily Allen Returns to London
18 December 2018
The atmosphere at Lily Allen’s sold out homecoming show at the renowned Roundhouse was unforgettable. Throughout her performance of completely unheard, unreleased tracks and breakthrough singles such as ‘LDN’ and ‘Smile’, she left everyone wanting more and more.
Above all, she topped the encore by leaving the stage for an outfit change; the Roundhouse team rolled out the decks and out came SHY FX, Stamina MC and the newly dressed Lily Allen to perform their new single ‘Roll the Dice’. Completely altering the lighting set up and feels of all of Lily’s tracks just having been performed – they absolutely blew the roof off before Lily ended on crowd favourite ‘Fuck You’. With a sea of middle fingers raised, Lily spoke about the meaning behind the track, explaining that she’d written it when George Bush was president and she had no idea what we had to come… hinting at America’s current state as well as the UK’s, by changing up lyrics of the track to wanting to remain in the EU.
It was really heartwarming walking along Chalk Farm Road and into the Roundhouse coming across all of Lily Allen’s fans arriving for the show. No matter what age group everyone was bouncing about and singing together in unison and there was a real buzz before the show. As Lily was on, just along from where I was sat was an elderly lady on her own, and half way through the set I looked across and saw her in the arms of a group of teenage girls singing and dancing together; and it stayed that way for the rest of the set. I don’t think it was just her performance that was keeping everyone together, but her engagement with the audience and personable conversations are what kept the atmosphere building. It felt as if everyone in the room including Lily and the musicians had connected in some way and we all left in awe of her and her fantastic new album.
